Stop the NY/NJ Williams Gas Pipeline

Williams Transco has proposed a new 23.4-mile, 26-inch diameter pipeline (“Northeast Supply Enhancement Project”) to expand its existing fracked natural gas transmission system. The proposed pipeline will cross Raritan Bay from Old Bridge, NJ. to Rockaway Point NY. Surfrider is opposed to this project because of the negative impacts to air quality, water quality, and marine animals and habitat that will result from project construction and operation. The pipeline could also negatively impact ocean and coastal uses such as beach going, surfing, diving, boating, kayaking, and fishing during construction.

We are also concerned with the dire impacts from the further burning of fossil fuels. This project will lock consumers into fossil fuel infrastructure for decades and increase the negative effects from climate change. In the case of a pipeline leak, thousands of pounds of greenhouse gases could be released, similar to what happened in California.

Update: Read the blog HERE for more information and photos. The New York Department of Envrionmental Conservation denied the water quality permit needed for this project to proceed on May 15, 2019. The New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection did the same thing on June 5th, 2019. However, becasue the permits were both rejected “without prejudice”, the company has reapplied. Both the Central Long Island and New York City Chapters in NY both worked on this campaign, with NYC leading the way as part of a large coalition of groups called the Stop the Williams Pipeline Coalition. The Jersey Shore Chapter participated and commented on permits in New Jersey.
