Oppose Resident-Only Permit Parking in Deal, NJ

The Borough of Deal, NJ has proposed an ordinance to restrict parking on six streets near the beach to residents of those streets by permit only. The Jersey Shore Chapter and a number of other groups want the town to rescind the ordinance and scrap the whole idea of permit parking.

Deal, NJ is one of a few towns in NJ with notoriously poor beach access. Deal does not allow swimming on its beaches outside the Conver Pavilion. Deal just got tens of millions of dollars of beach replenishment and the town has proposed permit parking on certain streets near the ocean with permits only available to the residents of those blocks. The Jersey Shore Chapter sued Deal in the 1990's because surfers were getting ticketed under the town's “No swimming” ordinance. A judge declared that surfing was not swimming and the town re-wrote their ordinance.
