Deal Parking Proposal Once Again Restricts Access

In May of 2021, the Borough of Deal introduced ordinance 1293 which would create permit-only parking on several streets east of Ocean Avenue. The text of that ordinance is here - https://jerseyshore.surfrider.org/deal-proposed-parking-ordinance-2021/

Surfrider Foundation volunteer attorney Andrew Chambarry has written to the NJ DEP with this letter - https://jerseyshore.surfrider.org/letter-deal-ordinance-1239-permit-parking/

As you can see, this ordinance, if passed, may possibly violate the Public Trust Doctrine and also Executive Order #143 issued by Governor Murphy regarding the Covid-19 pandemic.

The Chapter plans to fight this on the local and the state level. We need NJ DEP to support public access to beaches.

Here's what you can do.

  • Write to the town of Deal. Their webform is here - https://dealborough.com/contact/contact-us/
  • Call the State legislators of the 11th District, Gopal, Downey, and Houghtaling 732-695-3371
  • Call the NJ DEP's hotline. Tell them Deal is trying to restrict public access.
