Regan Quail, One of the Jersey Shore Chapter's Greats!

Regan Quail, a driving force in the Jersey Shore Chapter's history and an important steward of our coastal community, has passed and will be greatly missed.

Paddle Out will be on Sunday, November 2, 2014 at 10:30, North End Beach in Asbury Park. Since not everyone can paddle out, there will be a land-based celebration of his life in Belmar at 2PM at the First Aid Squad, 9th Ave. and D Street in Belmar.

THANK YOU for all of the positive energy you've put into the chapter, the ocean and the community Regan!

Regan Quail had so much to do with making the chapter what it is today. He led us and guided us in the early years and he remained a fixture at Chapter events long after that. The Chapter was his vehicle for his sense of righteousness and equality but he shaped us more than the other way around. Always a positive and uplifting guy, but Lord help you if you were unkind or mean-spirited in his presence. A spiritual leader to those who feel the Ocean is their higher power. Keep him and Betty and their family in your thoughts and prayers.

Regan performed our wedding ceremony. He had been a mentor when I first got involved with the Surfrider Foundation. We didn’t have any real ties to religion and we couldn’t think of anyone more fitting to marry us. Our version of the pre-cana (Catholic tradition where you get marriage guidance from the priest who marries you) was meeting Regan and Betty to Vic’s in Bradley Beach for thin crust and calamari. Marriage isn’t always a smooth trip, but he gave us a great start. And he wasn’t just going through the motions. This big, tattooed, Irish guy genuinely cared about us and our future - as well as the ocean, music, New Jersey pride, racial unity, work ethic, and so many other things for which I admired him. - Jon Coen

Djar Horn -  Regan is a warrior. and I'm glad we are on the same side of the fight. Regan was the first person to paddle up to me on the Asbury Park beach. He treated me with so much humanity no matter how I surfed. but more than that. he was clear that the beach and the ocean belonged to all the people. racist uptight twits could find another beach. and we became fast friends. his way of being in the world is a revolutionary act. We will be with you until the end and then we will help you move on to the next place.

Sandy Bottoms - Regan- you have touched the lives of so many! Ill never forget the day I was bitching about my kayak that was stolen and you immediately said " you can have mine"- just like that. My thoughts and prayers are with you bud!

Nancy Nazar - wonderful thoughts of his welcoming presence in the lineup...

Russell Lewis - Sending Regan Love and Light...

Sem Ge - So very saddened to see this. Regan not only married my wife and I but also helped me through my mother's illness, introducing me to and performing reiki. He is an amazing man and spoke so highly of Betty each time we met. Sending only good vibes . . .

Carol Mckenna -  Sending prayers ...

Will Heyniger -  My heart breaks about this. As a young grom and perpetual kook, he sheltered me as a protector and talked with me. Made me feel like a real surfer and one of the 'cool' guys. A class act and a hero. Ive tried to be nice and friendly to groms every time since. Time passed and I ran into him serving thanksgiving meals at 7th ave church in Belmar. What a loving, lovable guy.

Joanie Sapienza - God bless u Regan!!!

Charles Van Der Linde - This man has the strength of all the seas.

Charles Van Der Linde's photo.

Pamela Fortin I have known Regan and Betty for 35 years and I'm proud to call Betty and Regan (or aka Birdman ) my best friends. Regan, Betty, myself and Snake rode many thousands of miles on our Harleys. I have so many fond memories and get a warm feeling when I remember Regan and Betty riding next to Snake and I through the Shenandoah Valley, or going to Cowan's Gap every Memorial Day wknd. All the Ice Cream pit stops we made. Riding up to Newton, NJ just for a hot dog, Camping in the Rain and the hill climbs in Easton, PA every year. This picture is of Wingnut, Birdman and Snake...30 years later and as you can see the bond was stronger then ever. I know he will be with me always; wings on his back and a surfboard under his feet.1 2 3

Diana Haffey-Macecsko - Regan you have been with us for some of the happiest time times in our lives and for some of our saddest. You have always been such a strong presence in our family and a great friend always and above everything else to my family. I prayed so hard when you were diagnosed and cried when I heard the prognosis. I cried again today as those who are left behind always feel this hole that can't be filled when someone so loved and important leaves them. Then the unselfish part of me saw you with Joe laughing and telling stories that are making our Shawn blush lol. I know you are healthy and well and waiting to be joined by those who you loved so much. Fly high Regan and may God bless you and your family and friends. ♡♡♡♡♡♡♡
